Re: alternatives to marine plywood for boat deck? i don't think composite decking is the right choice for this. not as user friendly to mount stuff to, and i bet it would be way more expensive than marine plywood.. At the time i was broke so went for 3/4 inch primed/painted plywood deck; i raised the deck using a pressure treated "stringer" system underneath (not touching actual aluminum hull or parts, understand that is bad). this allowed accommodating a fuel tank and batteries underneath.. Re: ok to use exterior treated plywood for deck? when i redid the deck on my boat i just used regular plywood. the place that i looked it up on line said not to use marine plywood because the fiberglass rosin does not stick to treated wood as well as non treated wood..
I will fasten the pieces of plywood down with ss screws and finish washers. i have never fiberglassed a boat deck before, this is not yacht quality finish, i will paint the deck when done to give the boat the traditional workboat look. the boat is used as a pleasure boat so the deck wont be getting heavy use.. Why should i not use pressure treated plywood for the deck of my boat? why go through the expense and labor of epoxying the floor when it's on fresh water maybe once a week for the 4 months of boating (read: not stored in the water and used daily) and the american wood protection association has ratings specifically for marine usage? is there a concern with chemical reactions between the hull. Marine plywood is a great sheet material that can be easily cut using both hand saws and basic power tools. marine plywood is often used to build boat interiors and to replace flooring during boat renovations..
