A hydrofoil is a lifting surface, or foil, that operates in water. they are similar in appearance and purpose to aerofoils used by aeroplanes. boats that use hydrofoil technology are also simply termed hydrofoils. as a hydrofoil craft gains speed, the hydrofoils lift the boat's hull out of the water, decreasing drag and allowing greater speeds.. You have to design the hydrofoil section and planform specifically for the mission requirements, and deal with the stability and dynamics of the boat in a seaway. and in waves, the currents due to the orbital motion of the water can affect the hydrofoil as much as the difference in height of the water surface..
