The benoist model 14 is significant because it was used by the first scheduled airline using winged aircraft. the st.petersburg to tampa airboat line with pilot tony jannus provided a scheduled tampa to st.petersburg service beginning in january 1 of 1914.. A model 14 benoist airboat was shipped to st. petersburg by train. it weighed 1,250 pounds (567 kilograms), was 26 feet (8 meters) long and had a wingspan of 44 feet (13 m). it was powered by a roberts 6-cylinder, in-line, liquid-cooled, 75-horsepower engine.. One was a model 13; the other two were model 14s. the model 13 was to be operated by the school for instruction, and the 14s were to be used for passenger transport. a large, open-ended hangar was planned. the first of the two model 14 benoist airboats, no. 43, arrived by train from paducah, ky., and was promptly assembled.. ...
